Flag Day Parade & Dance at Ocean Shores
Honor Old Glory
Date: June 16, 2007
Place: Ocean Shores, WA
PARADE: After brief, early morning showers, the sun broke through and provide a perfect setting for the annual Flag Day Parade. This year's grand marshall, Lt. Governor Brad Owen led the parade. Highlights of this year's event included the 250 piece band and drill team from Explorer Middle School in Mukilteo, WA. For the fourth year in a row the Electronettes Drill Team from Seattle entertained watchers along the parade route. The "Baby Electronettes" followed their big sister group. Several pirate ships, including an entry by the Ocean Shores Pirates "sailed" the winding parade route. Ocean Shores is proud to host the largest and one of the only Flag Day Parades in Western Washington.
DANCE: Eight of the nine raffle winners at Saturday night's Flag Day Dance, "Stars and Stripes" were residents of Ocean Shores. Gretchen Thompson, Ocean Shores not only won the first drawing, a Pirates Chest donated by the Pirates Cove Pub; she ended the evening by winning the last drawing, a stained glass rendering of "The H.M.S. Bounty" donated by Stained Glass by Glasshound. Other winners from Ocean Shores were Iona Lee Anderson, a stained glass "Snowflake" and Janet Maleski, a stained glass lamp, both pieces provided by Stained Glass by Glasshound; Betty Wyatt, a signed and numbered poster and a signed and numbered book, Lady On the Beach donated by the O.S. Associated Arts; Marsha Powell and Jay Dalton each won beautiful vases donated by Opal Art Glass of Cosmopolis; and Kate Isham won a weekend "Play & Stay" package from the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino. The lone winner from out of town was Linda Mathes of Bremerton who received a weekend pass for two to the Dixieland Jazz Festival taking place at Ocean Shores in November, donated by the Dixieland Jazz Society.
Overall, the dance was a big success. The popularity of the band, Mathes and Company; the fabulous raffle prizes; and the large number of tourists in town for the Flag Day Parade combined to boost the attendance to almost twice that of last year's dance.
The Flag Day Parade is sponsored by the Ocean Shores Chamber of Commerce and the Flag Day Dance is sponsored by ACT (Action Committee for Tourism).
